Baby, It’s Cold Outside…

And inside as well!

Which may lead some of my friends, Alaskans and Northern Idahoans alike, to wonder, “Just how cold can it get in the tropics?” Well, on December 17th Guangdong Province reached its coldest temperature in 35 years… 5 degrees C (41 degrees F).

Now these same friends may remind me that this isn’t even a freezing temperature and that I’ve seen far worse. To this I will have to admit my defeat, I have endured much colder temperatures.

However, what my dear friends in the northern part of the world may not realize is that, while they have the comfort of central heating, Ben and I do not. In fact, few cities south of Beijing have central heating and even cities that do have it must rely on the government to regulate it (it’s usually turned on from mid-November to mid-May). Those of us south have to resort to long underwear and space heaters…

I’m lucky enough to work in a school that has school-provided heating in every classroom. Ben wasn’t so lucky. Instead he and his coworkers lesson plan and teach huddled in their winter gear. Once home it’s a mug of hot tea and huddling around the space heater for us.

Without any reprieve from the cold we feel more like campers huddled around the fire than like apartment dwellers in one of the world’s largest cities.

Hey you two! Just toughen up a bit and hug a bit tighter! When I used to go thru difficult times I was told to tighten up my jock strap and move on! That only applies to one of you. Seriously, I DO HOPE YOU FIND SOME WAY TO GET SOME HEAT!

    LOVE,
